The current phase of European battery cell manufacturing offers the opportunity for market conditions that are not only price-driven, but also aim for sustainability and circularity. Whether for energy storage or in electric mobility: A sustainably designed battery value chain, including recycling, can be a competitive advantage for Europe through greater acceptance. To achieve this, sustainability must be measurable and comparable. On this topic, the accompanying research team on the battery cell production funding measure in form of an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) has compiled a compact overview of relevant measurement indicators with case studies on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.
This sustainability metric provides a good working basis for policy-makers and industry in shaping the battery cell manufacturing value chain. In addition, the publication provides in-depth insights into how the topic of sustainability is dealt with in China.
