Battery production requires a whole new materials supply chain and a massive upscaling of materials extraction. Recycling is a key aspect to secure materials supply and to make batteries more sustainable. But how can recycling close the materials loop and what are the challenges along the way? We will discuss this topic with experts from the battery industry in our next Live Talk.

Our guests will be Christina Levin-Rylander, Director of Recycling Program at Northvolt AB, and Frank Treffer, Head of Battery Recycling at Umicore AG & Co. KG.

This 45 minute format is free of charge and opens a channel for critical reflection on important questions that arise within the European venture Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) for battery cell production.

What will be addressed?

  • What does it take to make battery recycling economically feasible in Europe?
  • Will recycling materials meet the necessary purity and quality criteria to prevent down cycling?
  • What are the top technology topics in battery recycling that we have to address now?

The discussion series is linked to the battery cell production Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI). The IPCEI aims to move the whole value chain to Europe to make Europe a global market player. Large investments are being made to open gigafactories in Europe, as the demand for battery cells will strongly increase in the coming years. On top of this, the IPCEI wants to help achieve the goals of the European Green Deal and therefore places great importance on sustainability and innovation.

The session is organised by the accompanying research team of the IPCEI programme European Battery Innovation (managed by VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH on behalf of the German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy). The team promotes the establishment of battery cell production in Germany and Europe, connects the funded projects with actors of the battery cell production ecosystem, supports political decision-making processes and moderates the stakeholder dialogue.
