The project management agency “Fundamental Issues and Strategies in Education and Research” coordinates support for four key departments within Division 1 “Fundamental Issues and Strategy; Coordination” of the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR). Among other things, the department is responsible for innovation policy, science analysis and communication, and the collection of data for education and research.
The project management agency provides conceptual support to the BMFTR in implementing the German government's research and innovation policy strategy and other overarching innovation policy processes and issues. It also promotes projects for innovation and technology analysis and manages grants and allocations for the collection of innovation statistics.
The main areas of focus include social innovation, strategic foresight, the development of strategic processes, the implementation of new innovation indicators, cross-cutting issues relating to start-up support, the strengthening of SMEs, and the promotion of an evaluation culture within the BMFTR. The project management agency also provided support in an earlier phase for the design of strategic, structure-building measures such as the SPRIND.
