Higher levels of road vehicle automation will be beneficial for road safety, energy efficiency, productivity, convenience, and social inclusion. Many key technologies for automated driving have been developed over the recent years, however there is still a need for substantial advancement in some areas. Nonetheless, stakeholders in the IT industry drive intensive efforts to accelerate the introduction of self-driving cars currently. This contributed volume, jointly edited by Dr. Gereon Meyer from VDI/VDE-IT and Dr. Sven Beiker from Stanford University covers all relevant aspects of road vehicle automation including societal impacts, legal matters, and technology innovation from the perspectives of a multitude of public and private actors. It is based on an expert workshop organized by the Transportation Research Board in July 2013.
