How can dialogue and constructive cooperation with the public become an integral part of innovation policy decision-making processes?
The German research landscape is currently experiencing the demand for a realignment of innovation policy towards a mission orientation. Through this orientation, innovations should be consistently geared towards solving societal challenges. This demand is not fundamentally new, but what is added to the current discussion is the focus on societal upheavals. It is therefore necessary to adequately involve the public in shaping these desired processes of change. How can participation be integrated into innovation policy decision-making processes for a successful mission orientation and what are the prerequisites for this?
In our position paper “The role of participation in mission-oriented innovation policy”, we show positive examples of participation and development opportunities for an innovation policy that not only listens but also discusses with them and enables active co-determination.
