The study “Sustainability of battery cell production in Europe” examines the success factors for a sustainable value chain. According to forecasts, the total demand for batteries for electric vehicles, stationary storage and consumer electronics will increase sevenfold by 2030. The biggest driver of this development is the automotive industry, which will account for 80 percent of demand in 2030. Sustainably produced batteries are necessary for environmentally friendly transportation, clean energy and the goal of climate neutrality by 2045. To achieve this, the entire value-added process of battery cell production, from the extraction of raw materials to the production and recycling of batteries, must take place under extensive sustainability aspects. Based on nine theses, the authors, among other things, focus on the areas of climate protection and circular economy as well as economic efficiency and employment.
