The automotive industry is undergoing unprecedented change: new drivetrain technologies, sustainable materials, and innovative manufacturing processes are leading to new production workflows and changing value chains. In addition, research is being conducted into autonomous and connected vehicles, new mobility offerings and services are being developed, and digital ecosystems are emerging that are fundamentally changing the way vehicles are distributed and used.

To support the transformation of the automotive and supplier industry and thus future-proof this key industry, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) is funding regional transformation networks and thematic transformation hubs for the automotive industry: The networks implement regional transformation strategies by facilitating local partnerships, establishing new value chains, promoting the exchange of experience between companies, and offering training programs that address local needs. The thematic transformation hubs are active nationwide and serve as an interface between research and companies, especially SMEs. They ensure regular knowledge transfer and exchange of experience with the aim of strengthening technological and digital skills in companies.

As part of the “Clusters and Networks in the Automotive Industry” project, VDI/VDE-IT is supporting the BMWE in implementing the two funding calls for regional transformation networks (“Transformation Strategies for Regions in the Automotive and Supplier Industry”) and transformation hubs (“Establishment and implementation of transformation hubs to support transformation processes in value chains in the automotive industry”). VDI/VDE-IT is entrusted with a wide range of tasks, from proposal evaluation and project support to the verification of funds. An annual progress dialogue, supported by the additional involvement of cluster, network, and innovation experts from VDI/VDE-IT, supports the further development of the networks and hubs and at the same time monitors the success of the funded projects.
