Europe is currently heavily dependent on imports of battery raw materials, as no raw materials required for battery cell production are mined in Europe in significant quantities. Due to the increasing global demand for the raw materials - caused by the demand of numerous industrial sectors - the supply of these raw materials worldwide will further become scarce in the coming years.

In the new study "Resilient Supply Chains in the Battery Industry", the team of the Accompanying Research of the European technology and innovation support program for battery cell production (Important Project of Common European Interest, IPCEI) analyzed the supply situation of critical and strategic raw materials for the battery industry. The results of the study show: Self-supply of lithium, nickel and manganese could be significantly increased. Likewise, diversification of the supply chains for these raw materials would be possible - thus reducing import dependence on individual third countries. In addition, the research team derives concrete recommendations for action for companies from the risk assessment carried out in the study.
