The work of the Communication Systems, Human-Machine Interaction, Health Department is closely linked to ongoing research work that is transforming our society in profound ways, both now and in the future. It relates to specialised issues, such as, for example, the intelligent use of publicly available data, humans interacting with autonomous technical systems in useful and meaningful ways and the security of IT systems in our environment.

The department’s specialists work on lead project partnerships with national programmes promoting research and innovation in which this transformation is significantly shaped by technical and social innovations. The tasks associated with this work are diverse: In addition to advising client ministries on the conception and design of research programmes, the department assists in the selection of projects for funding, in the preparation and implementation of grants and in the disbursement and auditing of subsidies. It also provides support to research projects and carries out audits required under German public funding law.
